Grant program for underserved students releases recipient list

In an attempt to create better learning facilities for underserved children, Ron Tomalis, secretary of education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, recently announced the winners of the 21st Century Community Learning Grant totaling 64.4 million.

These educational grants are federally funded and established under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

"The entities which were selected to receive funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Challenge provide educational experiences that complement, supplement and fill-in the gaps of the work being done in the classroom," said Tomalis.

Recipients of the grants were 19 community-based organizations, 17 school districts, 10 charter schools, five intermediate units, three institutes of higher education and three faith-based organizations.

While this recent grant program is aimed at improving education in the state, Chester Upland School District was having trouble with its funding until the school district, the board of school directors and several parents filed a class action lawsuit against the state for failing to provide education dollars to the district.

The lawsuit ended with Commonwealth of Pennsylvania having to release education subsidies worth $3.2 million after it failed to make funding available for the school.
