Educational grants improve education for rural students

The Monsanto Fund recently announced the launch of its America's Farmers Grow Rural Education funding program, which will provide educational grants totaling $10,000 and $25,000 to rural school districts in 1,245 counties in 39 states.

"We want to help strengthen local communities and education systems, especially in the areas of science and/or math," said Deborah Patterson, president of the Monsanto Fund. "A strong science and math education helps build a foundation for many careers in agriculture, but also will help our students to be more competitive with those in larger cities and other nations."

The America's Farmers Grow Rural Education gives farmers in rural areas an opportunity to nominate school districts in their area for educational grants that are awarded based on merit, need and community support.

According to New Mexico Business Weekly, another round of funding to promote the improvement of rural schools comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which approved an $800,000 grant for New Mexico State University.

The news source said the grant will give students an opportunity to find careers in natural resource management and agricultural research.
